High-Strain Rate Spall Strength Measurement for CoCrFeMnNi High-Entropy Alloy

In this study, we experimentally investigate the high stain rate and spall behavior of Cantor high-entropy alloy (HEA), CoCrFeMnNi. First, Hugoniot equations state (EOS) for samples are determined using laser-driven CoCrFeMnNi flyers launched into known Lithium Fluoride (LiF) windows. Photon Doppler Velocimetry (PDV) recordings velocity profiles find EOS coefficients an impedance mismatch technique. Following set measurements, aluminum flyer plates accelerated to velocities 0.5–1.0 km/s a high-energy pulse laser. Upon impact with samples, shock response is found through PDV measurements free surface velocities. From second strength pressures up 5 GPa strain rates in excess 106 s−1. Further analysis failure mechanisms behind spallation conducted fractography revealing occurrence ductile fracture at voids presumed be caused by chromium oxide deposits created during manufacturing process.
